SVN Host Decision

Alright, so I’ve finally settled on an SVN host. Here’s the short list of what I was looking for:

  • Excellent network reliability
  • Excellent data reliability
  • At least 2 GB of space
  • At least 2 user accounts
  • FogBugz integration
  • Secure access to repository
  • Good price ($15 or less per month)

I was checking out the CVSDude.com, SVNRepository.com, Unfuddle.com, BeanstalkApp.com, CodeSpaces.com, Hosted-Projects.com, and Wush.net. Only three had 2GB/mo for $15 or less: CVSDude, SVNRepository, and Wush.net.

Out of those three options, only Wush.net and CVSDude allowed FogBugz integration. SVNRepository did not advertise FB integration on their site, so Brett emailed them, and they confirmed NO FB INTEGRATION. Too bad, too. They had a nice price.

So I had to choose between Wush.net and CVSDude. CVSDude has been around forever…since 2002. Wush.net has been around since 2004. CVSDude has over 45,000 projects hosted right now; I couldn’t see a project count on Wush.net. Both seem to a solid data security plan (RAID, nightly backups, etc).

In the end, poor reviews of CVSDude made the difference. I typed in “CVSDude” in my Firefox search window (Google search), and suggested search 3 and 4 was “CSVDude down” and “CVSDude problems”. Ruh-row.

I’m sure CVSDude has to deal with a lot of traffic…probably several times more than Wush.net. For now, however, we’ll use Wush.net, and maybe CVSDude will work through their scaling issues.

So Wush.net it is!

Hi Nathan- As you said about CVSDude (http://cvsdude.com), the ripple effect of system outages become larger as the customer base grows (Google has learned this the hard way). CVSDude works hard to keep its customers in the loop at all times, maintains >99.99% monthly uptime, and gets many positive reviews on this :-) . There is also a live Status Reporting page (link from cvsdude.com), and a full-time team of friendly engineers on hand for support. Better to test out for yourself though- did you start a Trial?

Hi Guy, thanks for commenting!

I haven’t started a trail for CVSDude yet…I think we’re going to get the infrastructure set up using Wush.net for starters, and then slowly evaluate other options once we’re underway. I’d love to give CVSDude a chance at some time so I can see the uptime for myself.

Do you work for CVSDude, or are you just another satisfied customer?

At ProjectLocker, we also have FogBugz integration, and plans for 2 seats starting at just $2.50 a month (annualized). We’ve been in business since 2003 and all of our ProjectLocker Lite plans meet your above criteria . Please take a look at us as well; we’d love the opportunity to compete for your business.

Nathan –

Just as a quick update, ProjectLocker is now offering free Subversion hosting/Trac Hosting/Git Hosting accounts for up to 2 users and 300MB. Free accounts include unlimited repositories, SSL access, and FogBugz integration.

Just checked CVSDude.com and they have a blog. This week alone, they’ve had several instances of site-level downtime as well as problems with people accessing their code repositories and trac or bugzilla accounts.
